December 14th Creative Class - Matting & Framing Your Artwork
2:00-4:00pm, Hosted by Tree of Liminality at the Heart House in Cedar Rapids Iowa
In this class you'll learn how to cut a window mat with dimensions customized to display your artwork within a standard sized frame.
Nothing elevates the presentation of your artwork more affordably than a beveled window mat cut to fit its shape. Learning to cut your own mats helps you avoid both the high cost of custom framing and having to settle for the less professional look of mats that come with mass-produced frames.
We’ll provide everything you need, including an 8x10 frame, and walk you through the process step by step. You’ll learn about selecting from different types of matboard, cutting large sheets to size, mounting to a backboard, calculating window dimensions, bevel cutting your mat, and what to look for when buying frames.
By the end of the class, you’ll leave with your artwork or photograph framed and ready to hang. You’ll also have a knowledge-base that will help you mat and frame your own artwork affordably for gifts, exhibition, or enjoying in your home.
If you’re interested in taking the class, but find ticket price to be a barrier, there are a limited number of spaces available in exchange for volunteer help. This could be anything from baking cookies or taking photos at an event to posting flyers. Message us on any platform for more information.
Missa has taught matting and framing to a wide range of people, from casual art clubs to college classes. She is the owner of Tree of Liminality and cofounder of Farmhouse Art Collective.
