May 23rd Creative Class - Make Your Own Charcoal

$17.00

3:00-6:00 pm, Hosted by Tree of Liminality at the Heart House in Cedar Rapids Iowa

In this class you’ll learn how to make your own vine charcoal using sticks and a small fire.

Making your own charcoal is a simple and elegant way to transform garden vines and willow switches into art supplies. Charcoal can be used for a variety of drawing techniques, and is especially well-suited for sketches.

We’ll provide everything you need and take you step by step through the process, from selecting your materials, to building the right fire, to carbonizing and cooling. You’ll also have the opportunity to try some sketching exercises with charcoal made here at the Heart House.

By the end of the class, you’ll have 12 or more pieces of charcoal you’ve made yourself, and the knowledge base to continue making your own in the future.

If you’re interested in taking the class, but find ticket price to be a barrier, there are a limited number of spots available for volunteer assistants. Please contact Missa on your platform of choice for more information, or stop by the studio/shop at 1301 3rd Street SE.

Please note if it’s too rainy for fire, we’ll reschedule for Sunday May 24th or Saturday, June 6th.
